Garrett Riley, a distinguished Paralympic ice hockey player, will join the A-list presenters at the Community Sports Council of Ontario’s annual conference, Focus 2024. Riley’s journey is a testament to resilience, determination, and the spirit of sportsmanship.
Riley’s story began in April 2017 when he attended the Canadian Paralympic Committee’s Paralympian Search event in Montreal. This pivotal moment set him on a path to his first Paralympic Games in 2022. Despite battling injuries over the past two seasons, Riley made a remarkable comeback, joining Canada’s lineup for a miniseries against the U.S. and South Korea in late 2021.
Diagnosed with osteosarcoma at 15, the same cancer that afflicted Terry Fox, Riley faced numerous challenges. After undergoing surgery to remove a tumor from his left knee and dealing with subsequent complications, he had his leg amputated. This did not deter him; instead, it led him to discover sled hockey.
In 2019, Riley participated in his first world championships but faced another setback with a surgery in January 2020 on his amputated leg. Combined with the pandemic, he was out of play for an entire year. Yet, his perseverance paid off when he won a silver medal at the 2022 Paralympic Winter Games in Beijing.
Riley’s achievements have earned him significant recognition. He was named Brantford’s Sportsperson of the Year, joining the ranks of notable past recipients like Wayne Gretzky and Kevin Sullivan. His contributions to sport and his community have made him a respected figure both on and off the ice.
In his post-Paralympic career, Riley has been actively involved with ParaSport Ontario, participating in speaking events and promoting adaptive sports like wheelchair basketball and sitting volleyball. His passion for empowering others with disabilities through sport is evident in his ongoing work.
At Focus 2024, attendees will have the opportunity to hear Riley share his inspiring journey, insights on overcoming adversity, and the importance of community support in achieving one’s goals. His story is a powerful reminder that with resilience and determination, one can achieve greatness despite obstacles.
Garrett Riley’s appearance at the CSCO’s Focus 2024 conference promises to offer valuable lessons and inspiration to all who attend.
